Asus EEE 900a Drops Below $200
Thanks to a tip from a friend, I picked up an Asus eee PC at BestBuy for $199. It’s the 900a model, with 1gb of RAM, an 8.9 inch screen and a 4gb ssd drive. I’ve been wanting a netbook for awhile, and the price was right. I ditched the included custom Xandros Linux distribution in exchange for Eeebuntu Base, a light version of Ubuntu Linux with a normal Gnome desktop. After installing Songbird, OpenOffice, Filezilla, VLC Media Player, Opera, and the FBReader ebook reader, I’ve got about 700mb left.
I also upgraded the RAM to 2gb. I may upgrade the 4gb SSD to 16gb in a week or so — something my friend’s already done. At $37 with free shipping, the price is right at Newegg.
Here’s my eee doing its thing (photo taken with my G1 phone):

The customized version of Xandros OS that ships with the eee is great, and optimized very well for the small screen, but I prefer a full desktop with shortcuts and a handy trash can. I also like customizing my desktop, as you can see (click to enlarge):
