Posted on March 29th, 2009.

If you need a basic MP3 player that doesn’t cost much, the Coby 4GB MP3 Player might fit the bill. Amazon has it for $28.72 with free shipping. My wife’s Sansa E220 has a cracked screen, and my daughter needs a cheap MP3 player to tide her over – I may order a couple of [...]

Lauren Scores A Free Windows Laptop

Posted on March 28th, 2009.

Microsoft’s new “Lauren” ad (embedded below) seems  to be getting a pretty good reception across the web – except among die-hard Mac users, of course.  I like it – Lauren is adorable and the ad makes a valid point about the cost of Apple computers. I think this spot is at least as effective as [...]

The MakerShed is selling the 8-bit TV-computer — a hackable Famicon compatible computer powered by an 8-bit 6502 processor (the same processor used in Apple II and Commodore computers). Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Posted on March 17th, 2009.

For dinner tonight, traditional Irish (-American) corned beef and cabbage, and a mug of Guinness Draught. So good… Slow cookers make corned beef easy. I just bought a pre-cured corned beef brisket from the supermarket (very cheap this time of year), rinsed it and slow cooked it on low all day with a little fresh [...]

Organize Those Ebooks

Posted on March 15th, 2009.

lifehacker posted about a program called Calibre that organizes your ebook library on your pc.  It sounds interesting, and I want to give it a try, but my ebooks are in many different formats.  Mostly, Microsoft’s .Lit format (unprotected), although I’m slowly converting them to FB2 using ABC Amber Lit converter.  Maybe I’ll give Calibre [...]

Playlist Creator 3.5 lets you create standard m3u and pls playlists by dragging and dropping music files and folders onto the program’s content window. You can certainly create playlists from within whatever media player you use, but for me it’s easier to find the albums and songs I want in Windows Explorer rather than from [...]

Clean Up Your Music Tags With Two Great Tools

Posted on March 12th, 2009.

My MP3 collection spans over a decade of tracks that were ripped, bought, ‘borrowed’ from friends and, well…you know. That’s probably a lot like your collection.  And a lot of my older files have weak or nonexistent ID3 tags, which is the important metadata you mp3 player uses to identify and organize your music. I’ve [...]

Samsung’s SSD RAID Is Awesome

Posted on March 9th, 2009.

We’ve known for a while that one of the real bottlenecks to PC performance has been hard drive technology.  The fastest hard drives have trouble keeping up with the rest of a top end PC’s components. Samsung proved this by chaining together 24 of their 256GB SSD drives into a single RAID device. You have [...]

One of my favorite computer magazine from the old days, Computer Shopper, will cease print publication after the April issue.
