Cheap Stocks and Cheap Brokers

Posted on April 25th, 2009.

So I’ve been thinking about stepping back into the stock market, and I’m looking at cheap online brokers with low or no minimum account requirements.  I’ll be starting small, so both points are important.  A $5 commission on a $500 investment is a 1% front load, and I’d like to avoid anything higher than that. [...]

Shiny Apple

Posted on April 22nd, 2009.

Engadget: Apple reports best ever March quarter with a $1.21b profit, calls netbooks “junky” Well, some netbooks are kinda “junky” compared to expensive laptops — that’s why they’re so affordable.   I love my Asus Eee (which I’m using right now), but I’d trade it for an Apple laptop in a second — any takers? [...]

Get Vostro A90 for under 2 bills

Posted on April 19th, 2009.

The new Vostro A90 netbook is available from Dell in a basic configuration for just $199. It’s one of the best-looking netbooks out there, in my opinion – basically the Dell Mini 9 in “Obsidian Black”. Specs – Ubuntu Linux 8.0.4 – 512MB RAM – 8GB SSD – 802.11g Wireless – 0.3MP Webcam – Bluetooth [...]

Price Matters

Posted on April 19th, 2009.

The rise of netbooks and cheap noteboooks “In 2004, only 2 percent of notebook computers sold in the United States cost less than $800. In 2008, some 35 percent did, according to data collected by the NPD Group”

Who Would Have Thought…

Posted on April 12th, 2009.

The price increase on some iTunes songs is hurting sales.  Apple (and the record labels) may actually be losing revenue on higher-priced songs.  The self destructive anti-consumer behavior of the record labels continues. By the way, all MP3 stores have now raised prices on certain tracks — at the request of the labels.  But the [...]

Exo-Skeleton Brings Out Your Inner Iron Man

Posted on April 11th, 2009.

Would be super heroes with an extra $4,200 can get in line to buy the HAL Suit, which runs for up to three hours and multiplies the wearer’s strength by ten.  Now you just need a kick-ass backstory and a cool mask.  Me, I’d rather be an arch-villian – does the suit come in black?

Why I Hate Local TV Affiliates

Posted on April 9th, 2009.

I’m trying to watch the first installment of the big CBS mystery event, Harper’s Island.  CBS has been hyping this program for what feels like months.  And my local CBS affiliate just broke in so a stammering local weatherman could tell me about a tornado warning on the other side of the state.  It may [...]

Free AntiVirus Update

Posted on April 9th, 2009.

There are at least 7  applications that offer free real-time virus protection for Windows users.  The most popular seems to be AVG Free.  I personally use Avira on my laptop and desktops, but I put AVG on my netbook just to try something different.  I don’t have any complaints about either.  Avast is another popular [...]

A Failed Saving Throw

Posted on April 9th, 2009.

Dave Arneson, co-creator of the Dungeons and Dragons pen and paper role playing game, has died.  Arneson was less well known than fellow creator Gary Gygax, who died in March of last year, but he was an important part of D&D’s creation.  Every player of World of Warcraft or Everquest (or any other fantasy rpg [...]

Searching For Nirvana

Posted on April 8th, 2009.

Kurt Cobain was found dead 15 years ago today. He was a flawed man, but one hell of an artist. And much of the decent music we listen to today (and a lot of really bad music) was heavily influenced by him.

Foobar2000 – Easy Audio Conversions

Posted on April 7th, 2009.

For Windows:   Foobar2000 calls itself a lightweight media player, but it really comes in handy when you need to convert music files from one format to another. For example, I recently found a bunch of .m4a files (AAC) left over from my iPod days (years ago).  These were files I had ripped before realizing iTunes [...]

The new 3-tier pricing structure for songs on iTunes went into effect today.  This means older, less popular tunes may drop to 69 cents (these seem to be few and far between at the moment), but it also means newer hits will cost $1.29 while most songs will still cost 99 cents.  According to the [...]
