Random 80s Film Recommendation – The ‘Burbs

Posted on June 22nd, 2009.

The ‘Burbs is an under-rated  movie from 1989  with a large cast featuring Tom Hanks, Corey Feldman and Carrie Fischer.  It’s a solid — if predictable — film with plenty of laughs and an interesting look at suburbia. Here’s Amazon’s take: Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) would like nothing better than to spend a quiet week’s [...]

ExtremeTech Takes A Swim In Dead Pool

Posted on June 21st, 2009.

Back in 2001 I found out Ziff-Davis was starting a new tech website called ExtremeTech, at the extremetech.com URL. I was more than a little interested, as I happened to own the sister domain name, extremetech.org — I assumed they would want to lock down any other versions of their name. I contacted Ziff-Davis via [...]

Corel Home Office – Lightweight But Lacking

Posted on June 20th, 2009.

Corel Home Office is a lightweight office suite ideal for netbooks and older PCs. The suite is responsive and has a modern feel, with a menu ribbon very similar to the one found in Office 2007. At $70, it’s more affordable than Microsoft Office, but not nearly as robust. On my newish dual core laptop [...]

E-book Reader Deal

Posted on June 20th, 2009.

Newegg has the Ectaco jetBook e-book reader for $169.99 with free shipping. While DRM’d books are not supported, the jetBook does support an impressive variety of formats: .txt, .pdf, .fb2, Mobi, PRC, EPUB, RTF0. The screen is reflexive LCD, not e-paper, but battery life is still claimed to be 20 hours of constant use. The [...]

You can’t hide from gravity

Posted on June 18th, 2009.

A bad review for ABC’s upcoming disaster flick, Impact: I won’t give away any major plot points, but basically a huge meteor comes flying toward Earth and crashes into the moon, and the side effects are felt for many days afterward — many long, mind-numbingly boring days. Yes, there are a few random action sequences, [...]

Kid Discovers Mini Supernova

Posted on June 11th, 2009.

A 14 year old astronomer discovered a new kind of supernova last year: In November 2008, Caroline Moore, a 14-year-old student from upstate New York, discovered a supernova in a nearby galaxy, making her the youngest person ever to do so. Additional observations determined that the object, called SN 2008ha, is a new type of [...]

Your Tax Dollars At Work

Posted on June 11th, 2009.

After ten years and 2.5 billion dollars, an initiative by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to test the effectiveness of alternative treatments has come up empty handed: In an interview last year, shortly after becoming the federal center’s new director, Dr. Josephine Briggs said it had a strong research record, and praised [...]

Microsoft Corp will soon unveil a free anti-virus service for personal computers, reports Reuters.  This sounds like bad news for Symantec and McAfee, but very good news for consumers.  Operating systems should offer basic built-in protection from malicious software. Windows 7 Gets Badoobled

Posted on June 10th, 2009.

I just installed Windows 7 on my daughter’s troublesome laptop.  It went smoothly enough, although I had to use an old utility boot disc to format the primary partition – for some reason the Windows 7 disk wouldn’t let me format or delete the partition. There were a few driver issues, as well.  The on-board [...]

Woot Netbok Deal

Posted on June 8th, 2009.

Woot is selling the Asus EEE 900a today for $169.99 + $5 shipping.  That’s the same netbook I have, and a very good price. The 4G SSD makes it almost unusable with the default Linux distro, but other leaner Linux distributions are better (Eeebuntu is my personal favorite). And yes, Windows XP can be installed [...]

The Rest Of The World Loves Terminator

Posted on June 8th, 2009.

Terminator Salvation had a disappointing domestic opening, but it’s doing much better internationally. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m sure I’ll like it — my standards are pretty low when it comes to big budget sci-fi. Just give me lots of eye-candy and plenty of explosions.

Palm Pre Hits – And Misses

Posted on June 8th, 2009.

The Palm Pre seems to be a hit, even if there are also problems being reported.  As a Palm owner and fanboy going back to the last century, I’m glad to see them pull this one off.  Hopefully, the reported problems with screens, etc., will be addressed quickly. As I’ve said before, Palm should own [...]

Testing Video Encoding On My New Laptop

Posted on June 2nd, 2009.

I just used the latest DVDFab to rip a DVD directly to an ‘.avi’ file on my new laptop.  Both CPU cores were pegged  at or near 100% for most of the process, but the backup only took about 26 minutes and I could still surf the internet.  I used one of the generic XVID [...]

Psion, Intel Settle ‘Netbook’ Trademark Dispute

Posted on June 1st, 2009.

I was a big fan of ‘clamshell’ form factor PDAs like the Psion Netbook (and the IBM Workpad Z50 I owned) back in the day, and I personally hope Psion was paid handsomely for relinquishing their legitimate ‘netbook’ trademark. Engadget takes a more predictable position. With so many frivolous trademark and patent claims, there’s now [...]

Bing!

Posted on June 1st, 2009.

I’ve been Binging a little bit this morning, and I’m pretty impressed so far. The interface is clean and un-cluttered and the results are fast and seem at least as relevant as Google’s. I often rely on Google instead of bookmarks and remembered URLs – just type in what you want and the first link [...]
