If you like Bejeweled, you’ll probably like Big Kahuna Reef, a free game download from Amazon.com. I put this on my wife’s new laptop, and she really enjoys it. Of course, this is the same woman that keeps my old Treo 650 in her purse just to play Bejeweled on (and an occasional game of [...]

What do we call the last decade? I vote for the ‘naughties‘ It’s an awesome name for a decade – but hasn’t shown any sign of catching on despite more than ten years of effort. The lame-by-comparison 00′s seems to be gaining traction. But how do you say that? The oh-ohs?

The scientific search for extraterrestrial life is still going strong. The instruments, the initial phase of the planned 350-dish Allen Telescope Array, are designed to systematically scan the skies for radio signals sent by advanced civilizations from distant star systems and planets. Fifty years after it began — and 18 years since Congress voted to [...]

The new Sherlock Holmes movies seems to be a hit, and I can’t wait to see it. I’ve always been a huge fan of the original consulting detective, and keep Doyle’s stories on my phone for re-reading whenever I’m between books. Although some purists are indignant at the liberties taken with the latest incarnation of [...]

What’s the best frozen pizza? In the pepperoni category, I was surprised to find Tombstone came out on top. It’s a good pizza, just not as ‘upscale’ as some of the other choices.

This Hulu review seems preoccupied with what Hulu is not, rather than what it is. Starting with the assumption that the evil networks behind Hulu would do nothing to jeopardize any traditional revenue stream, the reviewer goes on and on about the lack of good content. The truth is that Hulu is not designed to [...]

Testing the FLV Embed video embedding plugin for WordPress. Streaming your own videos eats up precious bandwidth, but it’s nice to be able to do it if needed. The plugin only officially supports up to WordPress 2.7, but it seems to work perfectly on 2.9. Get the latest Flash Player to see this player. [Javascript [...]

Some PDF to Text Converter converts PDF files to plain text while retaining important formatting, such as chapter indents. I found this program very useful. I recently repurposed an old pc and 17 inch widescreen monitor in my upstairs office for video streaming Hulu, Fancast, Netflix, etc. It was a lot easier than getting a coax cable up there, and the amount of content now available for streaming is pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the flaky old computer kept displaying video artifacts [...]

The eSlick ereader is now being sold by eReader.com for $259 with a $100 ebook credit. While $259 is simply too much for this device given the more feature-rich offerings from Barnes and Noble (nook) and Amazon (kindle), the $100 ebook credit makes this a bargain. eReader.com is one of the oldest online ebook [...]

Riese The Series is an awesome new Sci-Fi/Fantasy webseries available on YouTube starring Christine Chatelain. Three episodes are available so far. The pacing is a little slow, but the story is getting really interesting by the third ten minute episode. Production values are top-notch. I love the post-apocalyptic steampunk vibe, complete with clockwork-adorned bad guy. [...]

Pick the mood you’re in, and stereomood.com will play matching music. It’s a clever concept, a bit shallow in its implementation. Even so, stereomood is fun and useful for people who don’t already have a giant collection of mood-based playlists (and who does?). It’s also a great way to discover new artists. A few [...]
